Will Social Media save our marketing lives…?

Around about now, the average Social Media conference (or meeting of Social minds) feels a little like this…

I have no clue what C3PO speaks of. I’m not convinced the Ewoks do either. But Han and Luke are impressed.

Han and Luke are in a tight spot: Endor – a brave new world from whence they need safe passage (after a little laser and light sabre action). C3PO is a loose friend and an expert in many things. The Ewoks are funny, fuzzy little natives who get over excited about gifts/gods from the sky… when in fact they ought to get out of Endor a bit more so as to know a Flake when they meet one. Han and Luke, meantime, are worldly types – they know better than to trust the robot… but, heck, he has a ticket out of this mess and they’ll go with him for now…

My analogy crumbles at this point… but you get my drift. There’s some odd things and strange tongues out there right now. C3PO is your worst nightmare of an expert – you know he’s gonna potter off as soon as it gets tough. Han and Luke are every brand’s heroes – the marketing men that live life in the trenches fighting the good fight, whatever environment they end up in. The Ewoks provide the comedy – they speak the lingo, but (and this is the obvious flaw in Mr Lucas’ film) they are fairly crap and ineffectual (today, they’d be offering their support on Twitter via RT’s saying ‘Hell YEAH! Great point C3PO. It’s all Evil. WTF!? Had some grrrreat berries for lunch.’)

Hello, I’m Roger Warner.

This web site is a half baked effort to capture the best, the worst and the middle bits of Social Media at this point in time. It’s a random archive of progress (or un-progress) circa 2010. My goal as of today (17.05.10) is to keep adding short, simple little nuggets to it for the next x5 years so that I can a) keep a little perspective in ‘the now’ and b) at some point look back and reflect.

NB: my view…. Social Media (and C3PO) will not save our marketing lives. It is, however, important – it changes what we do. Just how important is TBC, but rest assured in x5 years time Social Media will be run-of-the-mill normal and futurology (and its strange, accompanying linguistic codes) will have moved on. Have faith in this point, we’ve been here before (in technicolor!).

Disclaimer: the purpose of this is site not to sell anything or badmouth anybody (I run an Online PR / Social Media / Wotnot agency). (Ref the ‘dissing’ point – I don’t find this aspect of Social particularly helpful for anyone – see the ‘Spats‘ category here … and the fact is, as I’ve said before, we’re all really just finding our feet.) It’s simply an eclectic mix of things that interest me in the evolving world of Social Media.

If you’re similarly interested in creating an archive for this stuff and would like to participate as an author/editor, then I’d love to hear from you. I’m no Skywalker. I need as much help as I can get.

And those of you that have any passing snippets to contribute (anything at all), then please do let me know. Leave me a comment here and I’ll try my best to attribute and publish it.

Or, Tweet me. My details can be found below on the page footer.

May the force be with you, Roger.

Love it! There should be a section of “Twitter Bios we love”.
